What I've Been Loving Recently | Manga Mondays

Hey hi hello friends, and welcome back to my blog!

I haven't done a MM in a while, so I thought I would just catch you up on what I've been reading, what I've been watching, etc. etc. Just a chill update post.

Fruits Basket Rewatch

I finished my rewatch of the new Fruits Basket anime, complete with dubbed third season, which I hadn't yet experienced. I watched season three as it was coming out on Crunchyroll, but of course it was in the original Japanese, so I wanted to watch it in English as well. Of course, I found it amazing and wonderful and everything I ever wanted since I was but a small child, absolutely no complaints.

If you're an avid reader of mine and still have not watched Fruits Basket, what are you doing? Click away from this post right now and go watch it! I'll wait until you're back.

Fruits Basket (2019) is available on Crunchyroll in the sub, and Hulu in both sub and dub.

Kakegurui

I watched season one of Netflix's anime Kakegurui, and I gotta tell you, I have mixed feelings about it. On the one hand, the premise was incredibly interesting, but on the other hand, the animation and some of the...sound effects...were a little much for me. I did really like the OP though. But this is definitely a more adult anime, not suitable for younger audiences.

Kakegurui is about a high school ruled by gambling. We follow an eclectic group of characters, who all have some sort of obsession with gambling. We see a ton of different games, from five-card poker to Russian Roulette. It's been a little while since I've watched so I don't remember the character names, unfortunately.

My Hero Academia: World Heroes Mission

The weekend of Halloween I drove up to Flagstaff to see Angela, and the two of us saw the newest MHA movie in theaters! It's a tradition with us to see anime movies in theaters together. I was really excited about this movie because it was advertised as the Origin Trio's first real hero mission, but sadly I was a little disappointed in it. It was mostly a road trip between Midoriya and a new character, Rody, as a miscommunication and a little villain interference makes Midoriya a suspect wanted for mass murder. Bakugo and Todoroki actually felt more like background characters, even though all of the promo posters, pictures, and trailers show equal time between the three of them. So I'm not going to lie, I was a little upset about that.

Something I did like was the mini-manga that was offered along with each ticket. It's very small, filled with bonus information, character profiles, and even a short manga chapter that takes place right before the beginning of the movie. It gave me the Todoroki content I was really craving.

Spy x Family

I have read the first two volumes of Spy x Family and I am really enjoying it so far. I already have volumes three through five borrowed from the library, I just haven't read them yet. The "Forger" family is so dysfunctional it cracks me up. I think Anya is my favorite character at this point, because her powers are just so fascinating and they make her some really weird things, but since she's just a six-year-old the adults all write her weirdness off as a child phase.

This manga is about a spy, codename "Twilight", who is assigned a mission of infiltration and assimilation. He must obtain a wife and child, and get said child into the most elite private school of the Eastern country (he is from the West, for reference), all in the name of getting to a highly important political figure, who's son is attending the school. So Twilight, now known as Loid Forger, finds a young orphan girl to play his daughter Anya, and a seemingly shy woman to accept the role of his wife, Lor. Only, Anya is a government experiment with telepathic abilities, and Lor is the most dangerous assassin of the East. There's no way this could go wrong, could it?

Komi Can't Communicate

My favorite read in a long time! I am nine volumes into the manga Komi Can't Communicate and I love it. The art style in particular is amazing, which really shines with Komi's character. Her big eyes and otherwise blank face manage the best expressions. All the characters are hilarious, and I'm totally invested in Komi and Tadano's relationship. I hope we get many more volumes!

Komi Can't Communicate is a shoujo manga with vignette-style chapters, following Shoko Komi (first name, last name) the goddess of her high school, and her struggles with a severe communication disorder. Everyone thinks that she is this aloof, high and mighty girl, when in reality she's terrified of any social interaction, even though she desperately wishes for friendship. With the help of her classmate Tadano, Komi is working toward her goal of making 100 friends.

I'll definitely be starting the anime soon!

Okay, that's all the anima/manga that I've watched and read recently. I hope this more chill kind of MM was okay for you all, and I hope you enjoyed reading my thoughts.

Until next time!
