Totally Should've Book Tag

Hey hi hello friends, and welcome back to my blog!

I thought I would do a tag for you guys today since I haven't finished any books since my last reading update, and honestly I'm not feeling that well today so I thought I would just do a pretty lax post this week. So I am doing the "Totally Should've" Book Tag, where I essentially answer a series of questions with books that totally should've _____.

Full disclaimer: I don't know who created this tag, I couldn't find it anywhere, so if you do know who started this please let me know in the comments below or on Twitter (@AllyEmReads) so I can give credit where credit is due. But without any further ado, let's get into the questions!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

1. Totally should've gotten a sequel

I have so many answers for this. Most of my favorite books, especially of the past year, have been standalones and I would give so much to stay in these worlds. I think the three biggest I have are Red White & Royal Blue by Casey McQuiston, The Priory of the Orange Tree by Samantha Shannon, and Sorcery of Thorns by Margaret Rogerson.

2. Totally should've had a spin off series

Hmm, this one is tough. Mostly because thinking about my favorite series, most of them do have spin offs either already published or in the works, like the Percy Jackson/Heroes of Olympus series, and the Raven Cycle/Dreamer Trilogy series. I'm not even going to try and say I want a Harry Potter spin off, just because Rowling is effectively ruining the world on her own already, so my Maraurders fantasy must remain a pipe dream, sadly. But if I do have to pick one, I'd probably say a spin off of the Charlotte Holmes series. There's so much that Brittany Cavallaro could do with it! Like, following Lottie and Jamie's kids maybe, or going backward in time to a different set of Sherlock and Watson descendants, except one is a villain? Or maybe even doing a series on Lottie's uncle and Jamie's dad, since they were best friends but we don't get their entire backstory.

3. An author who totally should write more books

Okay, this one to me is a no-brainer. I absolutely love Madeline Miller's writing. She has the potential to write a book on nearly every single Greek myth, and I would be here for it. The Song of Achilles and Circe are two of my favorite books ever, so as soon as Miller announces her next project, you best bet I'll be pre-ordering it.

4. A character who totally should've ended up with someone else

I'm going to cheat a little bit and change this to "a character that totally should've ended up alone" because I really think that Leo from the Heroes of Olympus series shouldn't have ended up with (SPOILERS) Calypso. I think it was a cop out on Riordan's part. Leo didn't need to end up with a girlfriend in order to be happy. Like yes I do think Calypso needed to be freed from that island and good on Leo for keeping his promise, but they didn't need to end up together. I felt that pairing everyone off at the end of the Heroes of Olympus series was a little cheap, but of course then with the Trials of Apollo series we know that not everyone stayed together anyway. Really, as long as Rick doesn't mess with Percabeth, I think I can forgive him for most plights.

(P.S. This is the official art made by Viria from both tumblr and the Rick Riordan Wiki website)

5. Totally should've ended differently

I feel like there isn't much I need to say in this one. We were robbed, people. Absolutely robbed. Even though Schwab is one of my favorite authors, I truly think A Conjuring of Light could have gone in a much better direction. It just felt a little cheesy to me, with Kell and Lila ending up together and off to travel the world leaving Rhy to clean up the mess that was left of Red London. Like I know Kell had always wanted to travel and see the world and felt like he was finally free, but come on dude! Your brother needs you. The only good thing about that ending was Rhy and Alucard. Sorry not sorry.

6. Totally should've had a movie franchise

I'm always super hesitant on movie franchises, especially after the Percy Jackson disaster, so this question is a little tough for me. I know that we're getting a Raven Cycle TV show (I'm so excited for that!!) and we're also getting a Shades of Magic adaptation (whether its movie or TV show I can't remember). But I really feel like the Kingdom Keepers series by Ridley Pearson would've made an excellent movie franchise, because they're books all around DisneyWorld! Like, we already have so many Disney movies, I feel like it would've been super easy to adapt these books. I also feel like The Night Circus would be a cool movie, maybe even in grayscale sort of with just the pops of red. I feel like that would make excellent cinematography.

7. Totally should've had a TV show

Okay, again a lot of my favorite series are being turned into TV shows, so this is tough too. But, only if it's done right of course, the Percy Jackson series would have flourished as a TV show. Maybe animated, on Netflix. That would be so nice. I also think that The Secret History would make a good TV adaptation. It's so dark and twisted and detailed that a movie wouldn't do it justice.

8. Totally should've had only one point of view

Is it too much to say every book? Lol, not really of course, I just tend to like books with only one POV instead of multiple. Of course it works in some cases, but in others it totally doesn't. One such case I think would be the Wolves of Mercy Falls series by Maggie Stiefvater. The books were just too short to try and pack in four different POVs. I would've been fine if it was just Grace narrating the story. We would've lost some things, sure, but we also would've gained a lot more.

9. Totally should have a cover change

I'm one of those people that absolutely cannot stand mismatching covers, so I feel pretty strongly about this question. Also, even if I really like a book, I usually won't buy it if the cover doesn't speak to me. I'm an aesthetics hoe, sue me. I really think that Perks of Being a Wallflower should be re-published with a new cover. Even though I do in fact own this book, I just hate the cover! It's one of those rare times where I actually prefer the movie cover over the original, because seriously, what were the publishers thinking? A new cover would be awesome, maybe of a typewriter or a cassette tape? Anything would be better than this, I think.

10. Totally should've kept the original covers

There is no doubt in my mind. The original The Diviners cover was superior to all the other cover changes we have had.

11. Totally should've stopped at book one

This is a question that I honestly don't think I can answer. I've had very few reading experiences where I wished there was only one book, mostly because if I read the first book in a series and don't like it, I don't continue with the series. I guess maybe To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee? I mean, she didn't want the second book published anyway, and it was only after her death when the publishers said "Oh yeah, we can make more money off of her now that she can't stop us." So, I guess that'll be my answer. I don't really have any other books like that. Though, I haven't read Go Set a Watchman and I don't think I ever will. It just doesn't seem right at this point, you know?

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Okay, there you have it! This tag was so much fun to do, I hope you guys enjoyed reading my answers! Usually I don't tag anyone in these, since not a lot of people read my blog, but this time I am going to tag my friend Lissanne because I'm really interested in seeing her answers!

Until next time!

  1. I definitely think Priory should not necessarily have a sequel, but maybe have been split. Which would defeat the point of it being a standalone but still.... I'm less than 100 pages in and it's just sat on my bedside table because I'm terrified to read it because its huge! 😂
