Rivers, Reapings, and Rilke | Reading Update 4.12.25
Hey hi hello friends, and welcome back to my blog!
I thought I'd do a quick reading update for you guys today. The first week and a half of April I didn't finish anything because I had a big medical test coming up and was too stressed out to read. But since that test on Tuesday, I've managed to finish two books and I am in the middle of four more. That's a lot, I know, but I'm liking the spread I've got going on.
First off, I'm reading a nonfiction history book called The Trojan War by Barry Strauss. This is part of my physical TBR, which I really need to pay more attention to. I haven't read nearly as many books off of it than I wanted to by now. The library has just been taking all of my attention lately. I started this on the 2nd of April, but I'm not stressed about reading it. It's more of a "one chapter whenever I feel like it" book than a true "sit down and read" book, as are most nonfiction I own.A couple of days ago I started Sunrise on the Reaping by Suzanne Collins, which is of course the latest book in the world of the Hunger Games. It took a while for me to get my hands on a copy because they were sold out everywhere, but I finally managed to find one. I'm about half-way through, and yes it is absolutely destroying me. I'm taking a ton of notes on my phone (something I implemented in my reading routine this year) and I'm sure I will be a puddle of tears by the end of it. I can't wait!I also started my reread of The Book of Hours: Love Poems to God by Rainer Maria Rilke. The reason I'm rereading this poetry collection is because it is this month's pick for Carolyn's book club on Fable, the Wellread book club. I want to say I first read it in 2023? Back then I just dog-eared the poems that I really liked, but this time around I'm highlighting my favorite lines and passages. It's nice to go back and read poetry, because I feel like you pick up on so many new things as you get older.Lastly, I'm reading The River Has Roots by Amal El-Mohtar. This is a novella centered around Fae, which isn't normally my cup of tea, but I picked this up because Amal El-Mohtar is the co-author of one of my favorite sci-fi books, This is How You Lose the Time War, alongside Max Gladstone. I've been waiting for this book for ages and now I have it on Libby. Once I'm done with these books, I am probably going to pick up East of Eden by John Steinbeck. It's this quarter's selection for the Game of Tomes book club run by both Emma and Carolyn, and I only have a limited time from the library to read it. I don't really want to blaze through it, but it's ridiculously popular and I can't renew my copy, so we'll see how far I can get into it in the next two weeks. Who knows? I might even like it enough to purchase a copy of my own (though I doubt it. John Steinbeck and I don't really get along, based on past history).==========
Okay, that's all I have for today! I'd love to know what you're currently reading right now. Let me know in the comments, or DM me on Instagram (link in sidebar under the heading "More Media").
Until next time, friends!
