It's Not Getting Better | Reading Update 2.25.23

Hello friends, and welcome back to my blog.

I debated a long time on whether or not I would squeeze a reading update into this month, especially since there are only a few days left. February really got away from me. A lot of awful things have happened and I'm getting a serious case of emotional whiplash. The only reason I'm not in a complete depressive episode is because I have my parents and my partners keeping a close eye on me and helping when I am struggling.

Basically, life pretty much sucks right now. I don't want to get into specifics, but I will tell you a childhood friend of mine recently died and I'm dealing with the repercussions of that. However this experience has really shown me how much more emotionally mature I've gotten. The fact that I'm writing this now is proof of my growth. Even a few years ago, had this happened I would have completely shut down and gone ghost for however long it took me to recover.

So, I'm in a bad place. But I'm working through it.

Anyway, let's quickly talk about reading. Since there are only a few days left of the month, I won't go through what I finished recently since you'll see that in my wrap up. But I'm still reading The Way of Kings by Brandon Sanderson, which is the first book in his massive Stormlight Archive series. This book is over 1000 pages long! So while I'm nearly done, I still have about 300 pages left. However I'm absolutely flying through this book. Last night I read about 200 pages in one sitting. I'm completely fascinated by this story.

My favorite character by far is Kaladin. I kind of wish the entire book was from his perspective, because I just want so much more of him. He was the character I attached to the quickest, only about 150 pages in (only...jeez). It took me much longer to care about Shallan, who is other main perspective. I only really started getting invested in her chapters about 50 pages ago, so clearly there was a difference there. But now I'm super curious about her and wanting to know more. I have no idea how all of this will be wrapped up within the last 300 pages, there's just so much left to figure out!

Part of me thinks that I'll want to jump straight in to Words of Radiance after I finish The Way of Kings, but I will probably make myself take a bit of a break before I start book two. It's 1100 pages, and the consensus in the fandom is that it's also the best book of the series so far, so I really want to take my time with it and absorb all of the information.

I'm hoping that I'll finish The Way of Kings before the end of February, and I really do think I'll be able to do that. As I said, I'm reading it very fast, and plus this last third of the book is the final conflict and resolution and all that, so I think I'll get through it even more quickly.

That's all I have today. Thank you for being patient with me while I grieve and try and work through this time. I have a feeling that March will also be kind of scarce, but I'm hoping that it will be back to regular scheduled programming in April.

Are there any books you're hoping to squeeze in these days of February? Let me know in the comments, or DM me on Instagram (link in sidebar under More Media).

Until next time.
