Dark Lords and Black Holes... | Reading Update 11.6.22

Hey hi hello friends, and welcome back to my blog!

It's been a hot minute since I've done a reading update so I thought I'd come in for a quick chat and tell you what's been going on in my life.

As I mentioned in my wrap-up, I was recently diagnosed with ADHD. Let me tell you, it's been a rollercoaster and a half. Now that I have the language to actually express what's going on with my head, I've found that so many symptoms and side effects are making themselves known. It's a weird concept, since I've always had these side effects happening, but it's almost like they're more prominent now that I'm really paying attention. It's definitely been a lot, but mostly good.

Unfortunately there's also just been a lot of sad and stressful things happening in my personal life, which I won't get into here because there's no need. But I've been feeling so drained and frazzled, especially being an empath and having my entire household be affected by these events. It's like I'm getting sucker punched over and over again, first with my emotions, and then my mom's emotions, and then my dad's emotions...

Okay. Deep breath.

I am currently in the middle of two different books. Yes, I am in fact reading The Lord of the Rings by J.R.R. Tolkien, just like I said I would this month. I actually just finished the first book in the trilogy, The Fellowship of the Ring, but since I have a collector's edition, I'm only about 400 pages into this 1200 page book. Yes, you read that right. 1200 pages. By far the longest book I own, and I have Brandon Sanderson's The Way of Kings as well. Again, this is a reread for me, but it's been years since I've read it and I actually don't remember much detail. While it will always have that nostalgia factor for me (my dad would read it out loud to me when I was a child) I actually think Fellowship is closer to 3 stars at the moment. We'll see if it ends up being the least liked book in the series, because obviously I'm expecting this to be 5 out of 5 stars.

I'm also reading Death by Black Hole: and Other Cosmic Quandaries by Neil deGrasse Tyson, which is a nonfiction essay collection. In the 90s, Neil deGrasse Tyson had a column in Natural History magazine called "Universe." This book is a curated compilation of those essays, I think there are forty or so collected. They're all about physics and the progression of astronomy over the centuries. It's not something I would pick up usually, but it's been sitting unread on my shelves for a while so I figured, why not? Plus, it's been a while since I've read a nonfiction, and a science nonfiction at that (I'm more interested in history or true crime at this point in my life). It's an easy read even with all of the physics terms and equations sprinkled in, so it won't be long until I finish.
