Anticipated Releases for 2022 | Pt. 2

Hey hi hello friends, and welcome back to my blog!

At the beginning of the year I did a blog post detailing my most anticipated releases for 2022. However, I only did this up until June, because a lot of the books being published in the latter half of the year hadn't yet had covers, or a confirmed release date, or both. So now that it's June, I thought I would go over my anticipated releases coming in July until December. I've only got twelve books here, but if you want to see my entire list, I have a Goodreads shelf called "2022-books" that you can check out here.

I want to mention real quick that most of this list is either sequels or the next book in a series. Only three of these books are standalone novels, but since I read mainly series, I feel like that shouldn't be a surprise. Also, the dates I have next to the title and author are the dates that are on Goodreads. These, of course, are subject to change. I'm only using these dates as an idea of when the book is going to be released.

Alright, enough shop talk. Let's get into the books!

A Prayer for the Crown-Shy by Becky Chambers - 7.12

This is the sequel to A Psalm for the Wild-Built, and I'm actually shaking waiting for it to come out. I'm assuming that there will be more shenanigans between Sibling Dex and Mosscap, and I can't wait for the little adventures they're about to embark on. I hope that this becomes a long series, because I can't get enough of these characters or this world.

Empty Smiles by Katherine Arden - 8.09

This is the fourth book in Katherine Arden's middle-grade horror series, and I believe it's also the final book in the series. I'm a little bummed that it's going to be over, but I'm excited to find out how it'll all wrap up. Well, almost excited. See that cover? I hate it. I'm honestly terrified of clowns, and I have a feeling my phobia will increase after I read this book. But it'll be worth it to get the ending of this story!

The Drowned Woods by Emily Lloyd-Jones - 8.16

As far as I know, this is a standalone novel, but it seems to be in the same vein as her other book, The Bone Houses (which I read earlier this year and I loved it). It is set in the same world, but with a brand new cast of characters and new myths to follow. I really like Emily's writing, it's creepy and atmospheric and lends perfectly to the Irish (or in this case, Welsh) mythology she writes about.

Babel, or the Necessity of Violence: An Arcane History of the Oxford Translators' Revolution by R.F. Kuang - 8.23

That's one heck of a title! I have to be honest here, I really have no clue as to what this book is about. I just know that I want it. I really enjoyed R.F. Kuang's historical fantasy trilogy The Poppy War (if one could call it enjoyment? That series is brutal, it rewrites the definition of brutal), so I'm excited to see what she has in store for us next.

Artemis Made Me Do It by Trista Mateer - 9.06

This isn't a direct sequel to her other poetry collection Aphrodite Made Me Do It, but of course a companion of sorts. Trista's poetry is very raw and atmospheric, and of course since she evokes the Greek goddesses, I have to check it out. I do have all of her other poetry collections, so I'm excited for when I can finally have this one in my hands as well.

The Golden Enclaves by Naomi Novik - 9.27

The third and final book in Naomi Novik's Scholomance trilogy, and I am not ready for it. The ending of book two, The Last Graduate, had me literally screaming at the pages. I've never felt that upset over a book before, it was a physical, visceral reaction, and I honestly applaud Naomi for being able to bring that out of me. So naturally, I've been waiting rather impatiently for book three to be announced, and now I'm counting down the days until I have it in my hands and can read it. I'm praying to every deity out there that this is the ending this series deserves.

A Scatter of Light by Malinda Lo - 10.04

This is a companion novel to Malinda Lo's previous historical fiction novel, Last Night at the Telegraph Club. It's set sixty years afterward, but in the same world (we'll see a glimpse of the MCs from Telegraph Club in this book). I'm not sure if I could call this true historical fiction, since it's set in the 2000s, but it is during a historical event - the Supreme Court's decision to legalize gay marriage. I don't know about y'all, but I'm super ready to read this.

Greywaren by Maggie Stiefvater - 10.18

Is anyone surprised that this book is on this list? No? Good. Obviously, I talked about this in my Mid Year Book Freak Out Tag (check it out here if you haven't already) but Greywaren is my absolute most anticipated release for this year. It's the final book in the Dreamer Trilogy, and the finale of Ronan Lynch's story. I'm a tried and true Raven Cycle stan, so I'm already getting emotional thinking about the fact that this is the end. I hope it's everything I ever dreamed it would be. Don't let me down, Maggie!

Into the Riverlands by Nghi Vo - 10.25

This is the third novella in Nghi Vo's Singing Hills Cycle, which is a serious of companion short stories that reinvent Chinese legends and myths. It has beautiful, poetic writing, queer characters, and wonderful stories that you'll never forget. Like with Becky Chambers' books, I'm hoping that this will be a very long series, so that I'll never run out of words!

Stellarlune by Shannon Messenger - 11.08

Another series continuation, this is the ninth book in Shannon Messenger's Keeper of the Lost Cities series, a middle-grade fantasy adventure with twists and turns along for the ride. I'm absolutely obsessed with this series, I discovered it back in 2020 and binged almost the entire thing. The magical world that Shannon came up with is wonderfully whimsical but also dark and mysterious, and I love that as our MC grows older, she begins to discover that there is a darker side to almost everything she knows. This ninth book promises to raise the stakes higher than they have ever been before, and I can't wait!

Heart of the Sun Warrior by Sue Lynn Tan - 11.10

You don't know how happy I was to hear that the sequel to Daughter of the Moon Goddess, a 2022 release back in January, was also being released this year! This is the final book in the Celestial Kingdoms Duology, and it picks up right where we left off in the first novel. This epic mythology retelling of the Chinese moon goddess is incredibly vast in its world, and I'm so excited to see the new places that our MC is going to explore in this book. Also, let's just take a second to admire this cover. So stunning!

The Shattered City by Lisa Maxwell - 12.06

Another final book in a series, The Shattered City is the fourth novel in Lisa Maxwell's historical fantasy series. It promises to be epic and amazing, and with incredibly high stakes. The entire magical world is riding on our MC to finish the job she started way back when in The Last Magician. I'm eagerly awaiting to see what's in store for our cast of characters. I hope this finale one of epic proportions!
