Hey hi hello friends, and welcome back to my blog!
2020 was rough as all hell but now it's over and we can say we survived. I know logically that things won't magically get better just because the year is turning over, but it still feels nice knowing that there is a brand new year ahead of us.
With that said, let's look back on 2020. With so many horrible things that have happened this year, it's easy to forget the good things. And certainly something good this year was my reading. I mean, 255 books! That's just insane. Of course, over half of those were manga, but again, over half of those were manga. I read so much manga this year! The thought alone makes me smile like crazy.
So I'm gonna go through my reading stats. First I'll do the Goodreads stats, which includes manga, and then I'll go over my spreadsheet, which is novels only. The reason for this is because it would've been cumbersome to input every manga volume I read manually into the spreadsheet.
Damn. That's a lot of pages. The reason the numbers look weird is because Goodreads hasn't added my last book that I read to my stats yet. The last book I read was The Archer by Paulo Coelho, and is 160 pages long.
For some reason I thought I had read a longer book than that.
I'm pretty sure the only reason that volume 2 of Soul Eater is the least popular is because it was just released maybe a month ago, and it's a pretty old series to begin with, so I'm not sure how many people would get the special editions of it. I'm one of them, obviously.
My ratings were pretty high this year, not that I'm surprised. I tend to rate books highly unless I really dislike them.
Okay, onto my novel stats!
The spreadsheet I used was created by Book Riot, called the "
2020 Reading Log Template". They posted it on their website for anyone to use. I'm not sure if they're doing it again for this year (edit: they are! The link is
here), but this spreadsheet really was a lifesaver. This made me keep meticulous track of my reading, and it's fun to see all of the stats and charts now, at the end of the year.
Let's do some charts first: I've got book source, audience, form, and genre. As you can see, I mostly read adult and fantasy, and over half of the books I read I got from the library.
(As a side note, I just love pie charts. They're so aesthetically pleasing to me.)
I read a grand total of 105 novels (which means I read 150 manga. 150 manga. Just let that sink in for a moment. I'm pretty happy with the number of DNF's too, since it wasn't too many in the grand scheme of things.
These are mostly numbers from the charts, with extras added in like POC and LGBT+ representation. Those were still less than half, but I still read a fair amount of books with either authors or protagonists (or both) as being one or more. Also, I'm pleased that I read nearly 50 more books written by female authors rather than male. One thing I plan to improve on for next year is the number of translated works. I read a good amount of Asian literature this year, but not nearly enough.
Also, only 19 rereads this year! I'm pretty proud of myself that I managed to read so many new books. Although, next year I have a lot of rereads planned.
I can't remember why I read so much in February and March, but I'm not complaining. I figured that July and November would be my worst months, since July was when I quit Booktube and November I wasn't home for half of the month.
You know, at the beginning of the year I made a resolution to be a little more selective with my 5 stars, which turned out to be a big fail. In my defense, most of those 5 stars are my rereads, so really I only had maybe 15 or so new 5 stars, which is still a lot. But you can really tell that I tend not to pick up books that I don't think I'll like. I don't like to hate-read or anything like that. And I also don't rate my DNF's, because that's just unfair to the book. Hence why I don't have any 1-star reads.
Lastly we have the Read Harder challenge, which was created by the person who made this spreadsheet. It's just a list of prompts that encourage you to pick up more diverse books. I only got about half of the challenges done, but some of the prompts are about genres that I don't read anyway, like "Read a romance starring a single parent" or "Read a food book about a cuisine you've never tried before". I won't go out of my way to pick something up just for the sake of the challenge, you know?
Alright, I think that's all for this post. My last post of 2020. Wow. I'm just letting that sink in for a moment.
Okie-dokie, I'll see you in the New Year!
